Joe Maleady retires from St Lomans

Joe Maleady with his treble winning Westmeath U14 champions from 1988

I would like to take the opportunity to wish my old coach, Joe Maleady well in his recent full-time retirement after 40 years service with, St Lomans of Mullingar. He has spent an equal length of time involved with my old club,  St Lomans GFC after beginning his career with his native Rosemount. 25 years of those years were devoted to the development of Youth and Ladies Gaelic Football. He was influential in setting up the Youth Gaelic Football scene at St Lomans in the eighties which was ultimately one of the reasons why the club was saved from extinction.

He took players from my generation from U12 to U21 winning county titles and leagues along the way and this was only one of the group of players he worked with over the years. Joe and the other youth coaches put in a lot of work teaching young people the skills of the game and how to play together effectively. It is only looking back at it, years later that you truly appreciate the time and effort put in. Joe also had a wonderful collection of sweaters which brightened up manys a training session of a wet and windy Tuesday.
